Daily Sunscreen, Explained in Plain English

Daily Sunscreen, Explained in Plain English

If I could ask you to add only one thing to your skincare, it wouldn't be a fancy serum. It would be sunscreen, every single morning.

Dermatologists agree on very few things as strongly as this one. Most of the visible aging we see, like dark spots, uneven tone and loss of firmness, comes from years of sun exposure. Sunscreen also lowers your risk of skin cancer. That is a lot of good from one step.

What SPF actually means

SPF stands for sun protection factor. It tells you how well a sunscreen blocks UVB rays, the ones that cause sunburn. For everyday use, the American Academy of Dermatology recommends SPF 30 or higher.

Look for the words broad spectrum too. That means it also protects against UVA rays, the ones that go deeper and cause much of the long-term aging. UVA comes through windows and clouds, which is why sunscreen matters even on gray days at home.

Mineral or chemical?

Both work. The best sunscreen is the one you'll actually wear.

  • Mineral sunscreens use zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. They tend to be gentle on sensitive skin, though some leave a white cast.
  • Chemical sunscreens use filters that absorb UV light. They often feel lighter and blend in without a white cast.

Many Korean sunscreens are known for light, comfortable textures, which is part of why so many people finally started wearing sunscreen daily.

How to use it well

  • Use enough. For your face and neck, a common guide is about two finger-lengths of product.
  • Make it your last step. Apply it after moisturizer in the morning, before makeup.
  • Reapply when you're outside. Every two hours outdoors, and after sweating or swimming.
  • Don't skip the neck, ears and hands.

Make it easy on yourself

Keep your sunscreen right next to your toothbrush. Brush, then sunscreen. Pair the new habit with one you already have and it stops needing willpower.

You're not behind. You're right on time.
