"My skin is so dry, but my moisturizer isn't helping." I hear this a lot. Very often the answer is that skin needs two different things, and we're only giving it one.
Hydration is water
Hydration means the water content in your skin. When skin is dehydrated it can look dull, feel tight, and show fine lines more easily. Any skin type can be dehydrated, even oily skin.
Hydrating ingredients are called humectants. They pull water into the skin like a sponge. Common ones are glycerin, hyaluronic acid, panthenol, aloe and urea.
Moisture is the seal
Moisturizing means keeping that water from escaping. The ingredients that do this are called emollients and occlusives. They smooth the surface and form a soft layer on top.
Look for ceramides, squalane, shea butter, plant oils and petrolatum. Ceramides are especially helpful because they are part of your skin's own barrier.
Why you need both
If you only hydrate, the water can evaporate and leave skin feeling even tighter. If you only seal, there may not be enough water underneath to hold in. Together, they work.
The easy order:
- Cleanse and leave your skin slightly damp.
- Apply a hydrating toner or serum.
- Follow right away with your moisturizer.
- In the morning, finish with sunscreen.
How to tell what your skin wants
- Tight, dull, but still a bit oily? You probably need more hydration.
- Flaky, rough, feels like it's missing oil? You probably need a richer moisturizer.
- Both? Very common after 40. Layer a hydrating serum under a comforting cream.
A few small habits help too: lukewarm water instead of hot, a humidifier in winter, and drinking water through the day.
You're not behind. You're right on time.
